Rangers' Cairns ends holdout
Tues. Nov. 17, 1998.

NEW YORK - Defenseman Eric Cairns ended one of hockey's quietest holdouts on Monday when he agreed to terms with the New York Rangers. Terms were not disclosed. The 24-year-old Cairns had three assists and 92 penalty minutes in 39 games last season, his second in the NHL. As a rookie in 1996-97, he picked up one assist with 147 penalty minutes in 40 games. At 6-6 and 230 pounds, Cairns provides size on defense for New York, which ranks rank 21st in the league in goals-against. Cairns was assigned to Hartford of the American Hockey League for conditioning purposes.
