Fighting down so far this year.
Sun. Nov. 8, 1998.

Scoring is down and so is fighting - slightly. After 154 games this season (through Friday's matches), there were 209 fighting majors, slightly below the 213 recorded after 153 games last season. With 1.36 fighting majors a game, the league was on pace to record its lowest per-game average since 1992-93, when there were 1.25 per game. However, historically, fighting has always increased as the season has gone on. But make no mistake. Every single one of those fights was a spontaneous outburst of emotion between highly charged combatants and each and every one of them had an undeniable effect on the outcome of the game.
